Charcoal size would be approximately 4-12 mm and this size is highly suitable for mixing with soil and mulching also.
Use of Wood Charcoal in gardening is increasing day by day due to its unique qualities of retaining nutrients and moisture to enhance plant growth. Plants can survive without water for longer periods. Frequency of watering to plants can be reduced after use of charcoal. It improves soil Ph value. Use of charcoal in potting mix, protects plant roots from fungal attack also. Therefore, it is used in succulent potting mix as the most important component.
Charcoal improves aeration in soil. Due to its light weight, it is also added in potting mix of vertical planters. It improves overall health of plants. Useful effect of charcoal on soil stays for longer period.
This charcoal can also be used in Barbecue (Angithi). However, it’s clarified that no chemical has been used in this charcoal to help burning faster. This is natural wood charcoal which is primarily for garden use.
ADVANTAGE OF USING CHARCOAL AS MULCHING FOR INDOOR PLANTS : It reduces indoor air pollution, as charcoal absorbs harmful chemical in the air, it is especially useful for absorbing formaldehyde, ammonia, benzene in the air when there is painting done or strong smelling adhesive is used indoors or when freeze is kept indoors. It also reduces smog as it absorbs carbonic oxide, ammonia, formaldehyde, benzopyrene, nicotine, tar etc are found in smog, that is harmful to the human body.
Purifying water – As charcoal is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, it partially disinfects and purifies water before going to root zone. Charcoal also eliminates harmful substances such as surplus chlorine, chloroform, and contains rich natural mineral, like, potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium etc.
