Common Name: Maghai Paan, Naagar Bel
Betel plant is a vine belonging to the Piperaceae family. Betel leaf is mostly consumed in Asia. Its heart-shaped leaves are used for medicinal and culinary purposes. When crushed in mouth, it gives cool scent. A famous dessert ‘Paan’ is made by this and used as a mouth freshener. When plant grows more than 1 meter long, prune it to spur growth. The betel plant is an evergreen perennial. This plant prefers to grow in humid & warm climate
Watering & Sunlight: This plant grows well in diffused sunlight or shady area. Atmospheric temperature more than 420 C, may harm its leaves. Drainage in pot is necessary by making sufficient holes in bottom. This plant prefers moist soil, but not very wet. Hence, do not wait for the soil to dry up, before next watering.
Soil: We should prepare the potting mix in such way so that water should reach bottom of pot within 15-25 seconds. This is the basic quality of fast draining soil. Such soil also contributes to make the potting mix more aerated. To make the ideal potting mix, 20 % drainage media (river sand/ Leca/ Perlite/ Pumice or rice husk- use any one of them) in potting mix should be available. In rest of the potting mix, we should mix vermi-compost (25 %) and garden soil (55%).
Ornamental use: Yes
Medicinal use: Used for mouth ulcers and other uses
Spiritual Use: During worships as offering to God.
