Clitorea ternatea (Aparajita) is perennial outdoor plant which is grown for religious and medicinal values. It’s one of the most auspicious plants in Hinduism. It’s grown in form of vine plant. Its bloom continues throughout the year, except during harsh winter. It’s a fast growing plant and can be propagated by seeds. This variety of Aparajita plant blooms white flowers of single petal. However, other varieties of this plant may bloom pink, blue also. If you wish to make it grow in a dense form (like a bush) with various branches, keep on pruning accordingly. But if wish to grow it like a climber plant, tie its branches with any supporting pole. It’s a long life plant.

We can also grow this plant in balcony with direct sunlight of 04 hours. This plant can grow in diffused sunlight also, but blooming will reduce. Blooming is reduced during winter. The plant performs best in big size containers (10 inch or more) or plant them on ground.

This plant has important religious value in Hindu Mythology.

 Watering & Sunlight:      This plant is almost maintenance free. Even without fertilisers, this plant will show satisfactory growth. However, use of vermi-compost shows faster growth and more blooming. Even with low level of atmospheric humidity (20%) and high temperature (upto 45⁰ C), this plant continues to grow healthily. Its leaves may suffer temporary damage during cold weather, (need not to worry). After completion of cold season, leaves will revive. We should water it whenever soil has become fully dry. Drainage in pot is necessary by making sufficient holes in bottom.

Soil:     To make the ideal potting mix, 15 % drainage media (river sand/ Leca/ Perlite/ Pumice or rice husk- use any one of them) in potting mix should be available. In rest of the potting mix, we should mix vermi compost (15 %), cocopeat (10%) and sterilised garden soil (60%). Use of Neem Cake (5-10%) will further improve quality of potting mix.

Spiritual Use: This plant is very important in Hinduism.
